Like just about every kid in my generation, I grew up watching pro wrestling. Following it through it’s boom in the 90’s/00’s. After that, I stopped following it for about a decade. Only coming back to it when my son discovered it around the same age I had originally. My interest stuck around even after his had moved on.
One of my sons favorite groups while he was watching was “the new day”. A three man faction consisting of kofi kingston, xavier woods, and big e langston. They brought a sense of humor and mischief that felt like it had been sorely lacking in the current wwe product. Winning the tag team titles over, and over, and over. What struck me the most is how they did it their own way, promising to never turn on each other, and stating multiple times that they wouldn’t consider themselves successful unless kofi, the often undervalued veteran of the group gained success as a singles champion.
A few years back, they got their wish with a series of events that came with a groundswell of fan support. pushing for kofi kingston to challenge daniel bryan for the wwe championship. Despite the fan interest, the wwe management didn’t seem too keen on following through with it at their largest show of the year. Most of the fans weren’t interested in any of the other options, instead pushing hard to make kofimania happen.
Knowing the groups love of dragon ball z(as well as my own), I saw a chance to do something fun. Combining the two, I worked up an illustration and added some motion to it. I threw it on twitter and tagged the new day, eventually they saw it, and their retweets lead to over 50,000 views. Clearly fans loved what the new day were doing, and were dead set on making kofimania happen. Eventually wwe decided to give up their previous plans, and kofi ended up winning the wwe championship at wrestlemania.
