Friendship can lead to some amazing collaborations, that’s true of all aspects of life. As I learned, it’s also true of beer and art.
I met brendan and celeste gough at a friends wedding. At the time, brendan was the brewmaster at central coast brewing and he’d brewed an amazing beer for the occasion. Our mutual friend nate had commented that we work together on something in the future. Fast forward to a year later, brendan, celeste, and their friend monica had opened a new brewery, liquid gravity brewing company…. right as the world was about to enter a pandemic.
Nate was the one who first contacted me. Brendan had a really cool idea for a beer and name that he’d run by him. As a graphic designer, nate instantly had an image of what the label and font design should look like, and who should do the art for it. He ran the concept by me, and before we finished talking, I could see the illustration in my head. We all got together to go over the idea, I think we kind of knew it was going to be something cool, but none of us knew how big it would end up being.
After the beer started heading to distribution, someone connected to the owners of ec comics (tales from the crypt), thinking it was one of theirs, complimented them on how great the beer and label were. This one small act would eventually lead to them reaching out to brendan, the beer becoming officially licensed by ec, it becoming one of their flagship beers, and winning silver at the world beer cup.
All starting because of a conversation at a wedding….
